Dr Natalie Sorrell Charlesworth describes herself as 'a proud Northerner' - and that's more than enough for us at Mag North - but it's only a tiny part of her story.
Natalie is a poet (born and raised in Preston), and has just released her rather awe-inspiring debut pamphlet 'Fleet Salvage' published by the amazing people at Broken Sleep Books.
Working in publishing herself, Natalie is also a long-standing board member for Lancaster Litfest and has previously worked for Lancashire Libraries and Lancaster University.
Fleet Salvage contains poems inspired by the North West region, Natalie's own family history and masses of genealogical research.
Already - quite-rightly - receiving the recognition the words deserve, Fleet Salvage is a mesmerising and heartfelt pamphlet immersed in history. Natalie's poems explore ancient invasions, the first complete census, the lions kept in the Tower of London and other fascinating historical moments. Her interest in genealogy shines through as she delves into the chasm between the human world and the animal kingdom. Fleet Salvage is a pamphlet of incredible dexterity, accomplishment and great heart.
The third poem in the collection 'Fleet Salvage: Coulthard's Dad' has had a particular effect on the team at Mag North, as we track the progress of young men - global travellers - in the war years.
Dr Natalie Sorrell Charlesworth is a Preston native. She won the Poetic Republic Portfolio Prize 2014, was specially commended in Elbow Room 2016, commended in Hive 2022, shortlisted for the Bridport Poetry Prize 2020 and longlisted for Mslexia 2021. Her work appears in Poetic Republic, Elbow Room, Beautiful Dragons and Hidden Disabilities. She studied for her BA, MA and PhD at Lancaster University.
